Lions Southern Africa

Lions in Southern Africa

Lions International officially established its presence at the southern tip of the African continent with the founding of the Lions Club of Cape Town. Following initial discussions in September 1957, the first Southern African club was formally established on 14 October 1957, making South Africa the 79th country to embrace the global movement.

Led by Charter President Colonel John Billingham, the then-Mayor of Cape Town, and 28 other founding members, the club received its official charter on 5 December 1957. The momentum of "Lionism" quickly spread across the country; the East London club was formed just a week later, followed by new clubs expanding into Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth by early 1958. Since then, Clubs have been chartered across South Africa, Namibia and Eswatini.

Today, these local Clubs form part of Lions Multiple District 410, continuing a legacy of volunteer community service dedicated to serving those in need.
